Helmut Dudenhöffer, a retired
schoolteacher, is one of the founders of HerxheimBUNT, a volunteer
run organisation that helps refugees settle in Herxheim, a small village in
Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The organisation finds housing, provides
bicycles, sets up German classes and provides counselling among other services.
They work closely with the local Catholic Church to provide non-denominational
support to the new arrivals. Dudenhöffer has lived his entire life in Herxheim,
has deep family roots in the village and is proud of the locals’ reaction to
the influx of refugees.
