India is a
monumental country with an enormous population that is home to a wide variety
of religions and beliefs. The young women of Wunder Girl shatter the expectations of "proper" young
Indian women. Hailing from central Delhi, the outskirts of Nagpur, tiny
villages in Goa and the cosmopolitan city of Bengaluru, the young women are all
football players. In a country where men's cricket dominates the sports
landscape, these players defy expectations and are breaking down barriers with
varied support from their families and communities. Some of the women of Wunder Girl came to football as
strong athletes but many came via NGOs like Dream a Dream and Slum
Soccer that use football as a vehicle for social change, transcending borders between religions and
cultures by focusing on issues including gender equality, health and education access
and integration.
